Technologies

Technologies enrich and impact on the lives of people and societies globally. Society needs enterprising students who can make discerning decisions about the development and use of technologies, develop solutions to complex challenges and contribute to sustainable patterns of living. Technologies can play an important role in transforming, restoring and sustaining societies and natural, managed and constructed environments.

The Western Australian Curriculum: Technologies describes two distinct but related subjects:

Digital Technologies, in which students use computational thinking and information systems to define, design and implement solutions.

Design and Technologies, in which students use design thinking and technologies to generate and produce solutions for authentic needs and opportunities.

Senior Secondary Courses

We provide practical learning experiences so that the students can produce nutritious foods, construct items, garments and accessories and the knowledge and skills required to work safely with children.  Students develop the key skills of independence, responsibility, cooperating and teamwork within all of our courses.  These skills are sought after by employers in Hospitality, Child Care and the workplace in general.

Students in Year 11 continue to refine their skills and understanding. Under the guidance of their teachers they independently design and complete projects in a variety of materials. Year 12 students are encouraged to apply more creativity and utilise more advanced techniques to produce work of a higher standard and appeal. Students continue to develop and explore workplace issues including Occupational Health and Safety, employment marketability and finances.

From Years 9-12 in jewellery selection of projects are created including; rings,  pendants and earrings, using different materials including sterling silver, Cubic Zirconia stones pearls and resin, culminating entering work for the Young Jewellers award, run by Latitudes Gallery.

Years 7 – 10

Design & Technology

Students in Years 7-10 use a range of workshops tools and computer software, under professional guidance to design and create products that can be taken home and used. Projects build on the previous years experience and include phone stands, fridge magnets, wooden cooking utensils, resin art chopping boards, stools, occasional tables, candelabras, camping BBQ plates, garden art and mirrors.

We offer Home Economics in Year 7; these courses are a combination of Foods and Textiles.  We offer two courses in Year 9: Food Technology and Textile Technology.  These courses are semester long courses.  We offer three courses in Year 10: Food Technology, Textile Technology and Child Care.   These courses are also semester long courses.  In upper school we offer the Food Science and Technology course and the Children, Family and Community course.  These courses are yearlong courses.  More specific course information can be found in the school course selection handbook.

Digital Technology

All Year 7 and 8 student complete a semester of Digital Technologies. Digital Technologies aims to develop the knowledge, understandings and skills to ensure that, individually and collaboratively, students:

  • use computational thinking and the key concepts of abstraction; data collection, representation and interpretation; specification, algorithms and implementation to create digital solutions
  • confidently use digital systems to efficiently and effectively transform data into information and to creatively communicate ideas in a range of settings
  • apply systems thinking to monitor, analyse, predict and shape the interactions within and between information systems and understand the impact of these systems on individuals, societies, economies and environments.
